Measuring Your Window Quilt

First decide on which model you will use.  Generally if you have little or no space above the window or must mount on the trim, then style 100 should be ordered.    It is fairly compact at the top and can be used when roller/stack height would be a problem above the window - low ceilings. However, the system does project out into the room more than the 410 model.

If there is enough space above the trim, we recommend the 410 model.  This system is installed above the window and the bracket is taller so the roller unit does not protrude into the room as much   The seal roller is at the bottom of the bracket and requires installation with this part against a solid piece of trim or wall. Normally you should not mount this style bracket completely on the trim because there will not be an effective seal.

Taller 6”  bracket offers more versatility with the seal roller at the bottom.

  • Mount above Window
  • Width: 20”-96”
  • Height: 144
  • Bracket: 6”Hx 4”W
  • PVC Track 1 7/16” wide
  • Premount (allow 8” clearance ceiling to trim) or Unassembled

Before you start to measure, look at the window, trim and area around the window.  The different trim styles shown below require you to measure differently, so once you identify the trim type, follow the instructions in that section The tracks are best mounted directly on the trim or wall and the width ordered must be in half-inch increments. Follow instructions regarding rounding down or up.   Once you have determined the track placement you can then determine how you are going to arrive at your final measurement for width and height. NOTE: For the model 100, the shade assembly is usually mounted on the trim. The following instructions show 410 model position above the window.

Next, select the type of trim:

  • A: Clamshell
  • B: Colonial
  • C: Flat
  • D: Corner
  • E: Bevel
  • F: No Trim

For trim A., B., or C:

Shade width: measure outside trim width and round down to nearest 1/2 inch.
Shade height:  Measure outside trim height and round
to nearest 1/2 inch.

  • The shade assembly should be installed above the trim on a board  - the Premount is highly recommended for convenience and ease of installation.
  • The tracks are installed along outside edge of trim.
  • The window sill must project a minimum of 3/4”. Add if needed.

For trim D. or E.:

Shade width: take outside trim width, add 2” and round to nearest 1/2 inch.
Shade height:  Take outside trim height and
round to nearest 1/2 inch.

  • The shade assembly should be installed above the trim on a board  - for convenience use Premount.
  • The tracks are installed off trim on wood strips, provided by others.
  • The window sill must project a minimum of 3/4”. Add if needed.

For trim F (no trim):

WQ recommends adding wood strips for the track and brackets to insure a smooth operation as there may be a slight deflection on the untrimmed surface.

Take opening height and opening width,
 add 2 inches and
round to nearest 1/2 inch.

  • The shade assembly should be installed on wall above opening. Do not order Premount.
  • The tracks are installed along sides of opening on wall.
  • The window sill must project a minimum of 3/4”. Add if needed.

Not Enough Clearance Space Above Trim?

Your Window Quilt brackets may be lowered to partially or fully install on the top trim. You may also order your 100 series shade one inch narrower on trim style A, B, or C and  install the entire shade assembly on the trim.

Premount Clearances:

Premount 100 series requires a minimum of 5” clearance from the ceiling to the top of the trim.
Premount 410 Series requires a minimum of 8” clearance from the ceiling to the top of the trim.

Wide Windows

Windows wider than 96” (some sliding glass doors) may require the abutting of shade units. In this case, we suggest you hire a local installer as a 2 1/4” mullion will be needed to mount tracks.  When Highlight Valances are used, we require a minimimum of 3 1/4”.

Protruding cranks and T-handles

It may be necessary ot “build out” the Window Quilt to accommodate any obstructions. Thin, tapered wood strips (shims) under the track and bracket, may suffice.  Handles of a casement window can be replaced with one of our low profile T-handles which may be ordered on this site.

Corner Windows

For windows on a corner, please contact a local qualified installer.

Replacement Fabric

Additional measurements are required for replacement fabric layers.  Please see special instructions.
